I now see that Camonte is a very complex and interesting character. My initial impression toward Comonte was that he was cold hearted, cruel, and evil when he commits a cold blooded murder and whistles away calmly. That image later changed throughout the movie. We see that there is more to comonte, and he is not necessarily a tipical gangster we see in movies. Camonte has qualities in his personality that many people look up to and some even want to possess that makes him intriguing. He is ambitious, caring, and funny.
Throughout the movie we see Tony start at the bottom and quickly work his way to the top. He was ambition, fearless, and never took no for an answer. Tony was living as though he has nothing to loose and ended up getting everything he wanted. He was calm and has no fear toward the police when they interrogated him, and even talked down to them. Also when it came down to his bosses wife, regardless of the consequences of possibly ending up murdered he was very persistent in pursuing her. He stopped at nothing to get what he wanted, and ended up being with her.
I also saw another side of Tony that cause me to have a great deal of respect towards him. In the scene where he sees his sister in the club with another man, he get extremely overprotective which causes him to loose his temper. Some may view this as being hypocritical, but the way I see it is that he cares for his sister more than he does himself. Tony acknowledges the fact that his actions are wrong and immoral, and does not want to see his younger to go down the same road he is already in.
His complex personality makes it very difficult to to categories Camonte as being simply just good or evil. His actions actions are undoubtedly immoral and illegal, but in the movie Camonte is portrayed as more than just that. And in some ways Yes, it does glorify gangsters.
