1st amendment- Ryan O

February 17, 2009

The founding father of America conveyed a message to the people and wanted their perfected image of America carried on. Technically, by law, the Hay’s office didn’t really violate the 1st amendment. But I do consider the censorship to the movie a violation. In my opinion, Hawks should’ve expressed his way of making a movie the way he desires. That way the public can watch everything as is, and the movie wouldn’t be tampered with. Any alteration can make a big difference, and can just ruin the whole idea.

Howard Hawks a perfect example of a revolutionary, rebel that is exactly what “show bizz” needed, especially in its rise. He knew how to push the right buttons in that field had what it takes, with his money, talent, and his connections.  Hawks cut the strings trying to puppet him, and made bridges with great alliances, like Howard Hughes. To brake the entertainment barrier of what he thought is right, and what he thought should be laid out to the viewers. He had it all planned out, the story, the actors, and the dream.

The start of the movie Scarface, show a great part of America’s methodology of governing its people in the old days. “The word of mouth”, or the media, has always been a great way to direct a certain mass aiming for certain goals. When the movie industry was first born, it was a great opportunity to grasp that shortcut lecturing people’s minds through resonating to their own tune, entertainment. In the 1930’s the system was a lot more overt about their propaganda. Scarface is probably just a good way to spend time to the person watching it actually finds out that there is a lesson to be taught by watching the movie. In addition to the fact that this democracy publicly decides what is and what is not appropriate to watch and does action to illuminate what isn’t, like cutting scenes from the movie. It’s very surprising to someone of my generation to encounter such an announcement at the beginning of the movie, yet it is a beneficial epiphany to realize how the people in power do their work, and personally it helped me notice such highlights in things like the news, movies, etc. Laying these facts out, doesn’t mean I think it’s wrong. In the contrary, I think human beings can’t take care of themselves, I also think they need a higher order to prevent them from drifting away.

The Tony Cammonti responce

Scarface (1932) portrays the typical gangster crisis in the 1930’s, created in the poor immigrant communities in New York. Movie in the old days viewed characters as extremes, which makes it easy for Tony to give a strong impression from the beginning of the movie, and for me to have good idea of what he is all about.

Toni Camonti’s personality is the confident, ambitious, egotistical Italian American gangster. Which shows how much potential he has, especially since for his perspective as a foreigner, the conept of “America” as a system is easy to crack. Its noticeable how he carelessly disrespects the cops even in the police station, and boldly knew he had them and the politicians on top of them taken care of.

Working his way through the top, Tony truly believes that no one ever lived to be his superior even of his own kind, gangsters. Another thing I noticed is that Tony has a very aggressive. He is aware of what he can do and what the people around him can and cannot do. So therefore, he keeps on pushing and pushing, he knows not to stop because he doesn’t have to. To me that is him using the optimum amount of the resources he has. A big example is the way he was hitting on his boss Johnny’s girl in front of his face, proves how sure he is to be at the peak, sooner or later.

From watching the movie and the way thing are going in the first 30 minutes.

Tony collected a good amount of clues for a good assumption of what is going to happen to him. I assume he will rise to reach the climax, until another gangster just like him but hungrier will take it all away to the downfall.
